Kristen Radge is an artist and researcher working on the unceded lands of the Garigal and Anindilyakwa people and the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. Kristen investigates how new ways of working with clay on sites she has lived, currently lives, or spends significant time in can question how her encounters on unceded lands are embedded with legacies of colonial land ownership, conflict, and struggle. Kristen works with found clay that remains onsite to reveal how materials can be embedded with coloniality between her body and the clay body. Her project considers self-reflexive narratives from her personal histories with industrial extractivism living on Garigal Country and living in a mining community Anindilyakwa Country Eastern Arnhem Land, Groote Eylandt Northern Territory 1994. It is through her work on these sites that she considers the project’s broader scope by analysing her use of a colonial photographic apparatus and the extracted filmic image through her colonial body. Her project strategies look at examining new forms of fieldwork practice on traditional lands.
Kristen was selected as a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize 2022 and has paintings held in the permanent collection at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital Darlinghurst.
