What do you get when you cross a Royal Australian Army veteran and TikTok extraordinaire? Mr Julian O’Shea, of course.
Julian's journey started with a desire to study in a way that aligned with his professional work and interest in project management, leading him to Â鶹Éçmadou Canberra. He graduated in 2008 with a Master of Engineering Science. His first post-graduation job was as an electronics engineer in the Royal Australian Navy, a role that offered extensive responsibilities and opportunities to travel and work on fascinating projects. After graduating, Julain embarked on a year-long overland trip from Thailand to Turkey (approximately 7,000km!). This trip solidified Julian’s passion for engagement with cultures in a sustainable way, and led him to do his PhD in sustainable transport design, which included a Fulbright scholarship to the US.
Some of Julian’s other accolades include 2014 Young Australian of the Year (South Australia) and winner of Engineers Australia’s Victorian Professional Engineer of the Year in 2017. In 2016, Julian founded Unbound, a social enterprise that provided practice-based learning programs for entrepreneurs and university students, focusing on sustainability, entrepreneurship, and social impact design across the Asia-Pacific region.
As the pandemic hit, Julian couldn’t lead study tours across the world, which was the core of his work at the time. Still passionate about education and outreach, Julian started sharing stories about design and some of the interesting and surprising aspects of how the built environment works. Julian’s passion was infectious, and people started connecting with his videos that were now being published on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.
Today, Julian has a following of over 300,000 across his channels, amassing more than 20 million views. Ever wondered why , or ? Julian can tell you.
Despite his social media fame, Julian remains grounded and committed to engineering, sustainability, and education. His advice for aspiring educational content creators? Everyone has a story to tell, and you don’t need to come from a videography or media background to tell it. Julian recommends creating the content you want to see or wish existed because if you do, you can almost certainly guarantee that other people also want to experience it.Â
Julian’s diverse career has taken him to Monash University, where he lectures in the School of Media, Film and Journalism. In his downtime, you can find Julian at live comedy gigs, both in the audience and on stage. This year, he performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with a show called ‘M is for Melbourne’, which took an alphabetical journey through the weird and wonderful parts of the city he proudly calls home.Â
