Our Story
The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, is a leading global research institution specialising in alcohol and other drug (AoD) policy advice and interventions. With over 35 years of experience, we are dedicated to evidence-based responses to health challenges related to alcohol and other drugs, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities.
Our research has influenced national and state policies on social, illicit, and prescription drug use, as well as the guidelines and scheduling for substances such as buprenorphine and cannabis. We have also provided evidence for clinical interventions related to alcohol, opioids, cannabis, and smoking, positively impacting the lives of individuals, families, and communities in Australia and worldwide.
Our research strategy focuses on the real-life experiences of alcohol and other drug use, guided by rigorous and innovative research methods. We strive to provide insightful and empathetic decision-making and aim to achieve tangible, beneficial health outcomes for people, families, and communities.
By taking a holistic view of the complex challenges associated with drug use and related harms, we aim to shift the focus away from disease and addiction. Our multidisciplinary research activities translate into impactful health approaches, directly influencing harm reduction in diverse populations.
Focusing on Australia and its role in the Asia Pacific region, NDARC is committed to achieving global impact while addressing local needs.
